Inmayil Nanmai Tharuvar Temple From Madurai

In the heart of Madurai, near Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, stands an ancient shrine where Lord Shiva himself consecrated the deity. Unlike most Shiva temples, this one faces west. Legend says Lord Shiva personally performed rituals for the Lingam here, adding to its spiritual significance.
During the wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar, it was decided Meenakshi would rule Madurai for 4 months and Sundareswarar for 8. Before taking the throne, Lord Sundareswarar performed a Shiva Pooja, consecrating a Lingam named Abishta Vaadappadeswarar

This temple offers a rare sight of Lord Shiva facing west in a worshipping posture. Devotees are fortunate to witness both Lord Shiva and the sacred Lingam here. They can also experience a unique darshan from the rear, where Lord Shiva and Goddess Meenakshi are seen offering Pooja to the Lingam.

As a Shaivite temple, all major festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva are celebrated with great devotion and grandeur. Among the most significant are Maha Shivaratri, Pradosham, and Brahmotsavam, which draw large crowds of devotees.
