Hubli City

Hubli and Dharwad, though distinct regions, are popularly known as the twin cities of Karnataka. Located just 20 km apart, Hubli serves as a prominent commercial center, while Dharwad is the administrative heart of the region.Hubli, an industrial hub and trading powerhouse, is the business core of the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation. The area, once part of the Vijayanagara Empire, is now known for its handloom textile industry. During the empire’s reign, Hubli was a major center for cotton and iron trade, flourishing in commerce. In contrast, Dharwad has long been a center of arts and literature, drawing scholars and artists alike.

Dharwad’s historical significance is equally rich, having been ruled by dynasties such as the Bahmani Sultanate, Chalukyas, Marathas, Mughals, Vijayanagara Empire, and later the Mysore Kingdom, before coming under British rule.

The name “Hubli,” meaning “flowering creeper,” reflects its agricultural landscape, with chili pepper, cotton, and peanuts as staple crops. Hubli is also the headquarters of the South Western Railway Zone, strengthening its role as a logistical hub. Today, both cities are being developed as smart cities, with ambitious projects like the Green City and Solar City initiatives, further enhancing their unique culture and urban landscape.

As the second most populous and largest urban agglomeration in Karnataka, Hubli-Dharwad continues to grow, blending modern advancements with its rich heritage.
