Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur

Arignar Anna Zoological Park, also known as Vandalur Zoo, is India’s largest zoo, covering 1,300 acres.

It was initially established in 1855 at a museum in Chennai and relocated to Vandalur in 1985.The zoo was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, with a relocation cost of $75 million.

It houses 2,553 species, including 1,500 wild species and 46 endangered species.The zoo features natural habitats, two aviaries, a Butterfly House, a Reptile House, and a Primate House.

Facilities include Zoo School, a Zoo Library, and educational exhibits like the Pre-historic Animal Park.

It offers safaris, including elephant safaris, through areas resembling the Western Ghats.The zoo is involved in wildlife conservation with solar-powered enclosures for animal comfort.
